Abstract
972,928. Reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. July 15, 1963 [July 16, 1962], No. 27968/63. Heading G6C. An electrical connecting device such as for fuel element thermocouples comprises an outer assembly 25 &c. connected to the walls 10 of a nuclear reactor channel, and an inner tubular assembly 40, 56 removably disposed within the channel, said outer assembly comprising at least one contact face 26 of a diameter substantially the same as the channel diameter, said detachable assembly comprising an inner member 56 and an outer member 40 connected together to allow limited axial movement therebetween, the outer member including at least one contact finger 49 pivotally mounted and resiliently urged towards a position in which it is retracted into a recess 74 in the outer member, and the inner member including grappling means 62 for raising and lowering the movable assembly, and an inclined surface 68 for urging the contact finger outwards when the movable assembly is not being lifted. The outer assembly is secured in a hexagonal tile 8 abutting the top of the graphite core member 4. In the embodiment illustrated there are two fixed contact faces, 26 and 26<SP>1</SP>, each formed by a close helical wire coil supported by insulating pillars 22, 22<SP>1</SP>. The contact coils are separated from each other by insulating rings 25, 25<SP>1</SP> and a further ring 18 carrying insulating rollers 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. The movable assembly is centralized by one or more sets of spring-urged plungers 44. The axial length of the fixed contact faces allows the connector to accommodate large axial movements caused by expansion of the fuel elements, and the construction of the movable part of the connector is such as to offer a minimum of resistance to coolant flow in the channel. In addition to accommodating more than two axially spaced fixed contacts, the signal capacity may be further increased by splitting each of the tube-like fixed contacts into a number of segments, and providing for correct angular orientation of the movable contacts. Specification 954,777 is referred to.
