The vents 13 are closed, when a storage battery is being filled, by an apertured plate 11 which is slidable on the upper surface of battery box 7. When the cover 15, which has integral plugs 16, is replaced after filling, the plate 11 is moved to the left by the engagement of cam surfaces 17 formed on some of the plugs with the edges of corresponding apertures 18 in the plate, thereby uncovering the vents 13.
