Abstract
A water-soluble corrosion inhibiting composition consists of the sodium, potassium or calcium salt of glycerophosphoric acid, in a proportion not exceeding 5% by weight of the aqueous solution. The aqueous solution may also contain another corrosion-inhibitor, e.g. sodium metasilicate, sodium benzoate, or a mixture of sodium benzoate and sodium metasilicate. The corrosion-inhibiting solution of the invention is for use as a liquid coolant in internal combustion engines. The glycerophosphate salt ranges from 0.3-5% by weight in the solution, preferably 0.5-1.0%, and when the above additives are added the glycerophosphate may be reduced to 0.075% by weight. A preferred coolant contains 0.075% sodium glycerophosphate and 0.35% by weight water glass; and such a coolant may be formulated from 0.5% by weight of a concentrate, said concentrate containing 70% water glass, 15% sodium glycerophosphate and 15% water. A further coolant consists of water, 0.18% sodium glycerophosphate and 0.12% sodium benzoate.
