Abstract
Unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes are produced by contacting at elevated temperature in the vapour phase a gaseous mixture of an olefine and oxygen with a catalyst containing arsenic, tungsten and oxygen. The catalyst may also contain molybdenum oxide and/or iron oxides and may be deposited on a suitable carrier, in particular silica gel. The catalysts may be used in the form of grains or powders which may be pelletted. The reaction gases may contain a diluent gas, e.g. nitrogen, propane, oxides of carbon or water vapour. The preferred reaction temperatures are in the range 300-700 DEG C. The activity of the catalyst may be maintained by passing a volatile oxygenated compound of arsenic, for example arsenic trioxide, into the reactor with the reactants. Alternatively, the volatile arsenic compound may be introduced as a solution, for example, in water or hydrochloric acid. Examples are given of the oxidation of propylene and isobutylene to acrolein and methacrolein respectively.ALSO:A catalyst for use in the oxidation of olefines to unsaturated aldehydes comprises arsenic, tungsten and oxygen with optionally molybdenum and/or iron. The catalyst may be supported on conventional supports, e.g. silica gel, Al2O3, BPO4, TiO2, BeO, pumice, SiC and AlPO4. Preferably the arsenic, tungsten and oxygen are used in the form of arseno-tungsten acids. Before use the catalyst may be activated by treatment at 100-500 DEG C. with air, water vapour or inert gases. Preferably the catalyst has a surface area of less than 200 sq.m./gm. and it may be used in a fixed bed, a fluidized bed or a moving bed. The activity of the catalyst may be maintained by passing a volatile oxygenated compound of arsenic, e.g. arsenic trioxide, in the form of a vapour or as a solution in water or aqueous hydrochloric acid, into the reactor along with the reactants.
