972,231. Bags, making; seaming non-metallic sheet material. R. W. BARRACLOUGH Ltd. June 5, 1961 [June 15, 1960], No. 20891/60. Headings B5D and B5K. [Also in Divisions B6 and B8] A machine for forming block bottom bags from lengths of gusseted tubing 11a of semirigid material comprises means (Fig. 15) for closing an end of the tube length and means for inflating the bag so formed and for forming a block bottom thereon. The machines disclosed produce such a bag; provide a weakened opening portion therein covered by a label; fill the bag and finally seal its upper edges. The machine of the first embodiment comprises a twelve point turret (Fig. 7) rotated intermittently through twelve working stations. The turret carries twelve bag supporting mechanisms comprising three jaw members 41, 42, 45 (Figs. 15) which can be separated by acting on a buttress 45g. A length of tubing 11 is cut and fed from a continuous roll (Fig. 12, not shown; see Division B6) to a gripper at station A which then moves to B where the tubing is siezed by members 81, 82 adjacent the bottom edges which are then heated by an electric radiator 93 to welding temperature. Members 81, 82 and the heater 93 then withdraw and clamps 101, 102 advance to seal the bottom edge of the bag; clamps 101, 102 are water cooled to set the seal. As the bag reaches station C the ungripped half of the bag is drawn away by a suction pad 111 (Fig. 17), an anvil 115b is inserted into the open mouth and a punch 118 strikes the side of the bag to produce a weakened disc portion. At station D a label 120a (Fig. 20) is heat sealed over the weakened portion, a part being left unsealed to act as an opening tab (see Division B8). At station E a second suction pad 140 opens the bag and a nozzle is inserted (Figs. 21-24, not shown), the pad 140 then closing the bag and gripping the nozzle between its walls. High pressure air, nitrogen &c. issues from the nozzle to inflate the bag, a supporting platform rising to assist in producing a flat bottom. The remaining stations of the turret are concerned with the filling and closing of the final package (see Division B8). A second machine, having a number of extra turret positions, differs from the first in providing a number of stages of preheating prior to sealing the bottom of the bag.
