[Also in Division G4] The magnitude of the dynamic unbalance of a wheel as determined on a balancing machine is modified by a factor depending on the moment of inertia, to obtain the true balancing mass, the moment of inertia being proportional to the mechanical resonant frequency, measured by a tachometer when the unbalance signals are maximum. The true balancing mass is the nominal balancing mass multiplied by the ratio of the resonant frequency of the test wheel to that of a standard wheel. As shown (Fig. 1) the unbalance of the wheel 1 is measured on a recording disc 4, and the rotational frequency by a revolution counter 5 fed with pulses from a generator 6. When the amplitude of oscillation is maximum the pointer of counter 5 is clamped, indicating the resonant frequency of the wheel. Alternatively, as the rotational speed is increased a counting circuit may be switched on when the amplitude of oscillation starts to increase to count the number of pulses from generator 6 in a predetermined time interval which includes the resonant frequency of rotation.
