971,578. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. FORGROVE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Sept. 17, 1963 [Oct. 2, 1962], No. 37372/62. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B8] A heat sealing member, for sealing wrapped packages having uneven surfaces, comprises a heated rigid block 11, a sheet 13 of flexible material attached to the block 11 and extending over a face of the block and means for forcing air under pressure into the space 18 between the sheet 13 and the block 11 and for exhausting air from this space. The block 11 is made of metal and contains a heater 12. The sheet 13, preferably of glass fibre impregnated with silicone rubber, is attached to the block 11 by side plates (not shown) and end plates 16. The space 18 is connected by a duct 19 and a pipe 20 to an air cylinder 21 having a piston 22 actuated by a rod 23. In use, the sheet 13 is first pulled down by suction to contact the heated block 11 and air is then pumped under the sheet 13 to lift it from the block and contact the package to be sealed. The heater may be reciprocable towards and away from a package traversed past it by an intermittently moving conveyer, Figs 5-8 (not shown), or may remain stationary. Alternatively, packages 24 are continuously fed by a conveyer 25 synchronized to move with a conveyer 27 on which the sealing members 10 are mounted.
