Abstract
971,480. Air-cooled condensers for steam turbines. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEALUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM.-GES.]. Feb. 18, 1963, No. 6515/63. Heading B1B. The exhaust steam from a turbine is condensed by passing it into a reflux condenser arranged at the base of a dry cooling tower so that the outer surfaces of the condenser are cooled by a draught of ambient air produced by convection currents created in the air inside the tower. In the plant shown, power station 1 is erected inside cooling tower 2; and the lower part of the wall of the tower is formed by heat-exchange elements 4 mounted, in zigzag formation, around the periphery of the tower. Each element 4 comprises a stack of finned tubes 10 mounted between a lower header 9 and an upper header 12. The exhaust steam is introduced into the lower headers ; and the condensate is withdrawn from the same headers. Non-condensable gases are withdrawn from the upper headers by a steamjet pump. The air draught in the tower is reinforced by the discharge of hot gases through chimney 3.
