Abstract

A process for substrating film backings made of polyethylene terephthalate by an application of one or more adherent layers containing a solvent for the polyester film backing, is characterized in that the backing is given high-frequency treatment before the application of the or each layer. The high frequency treatment may be in the frequency range of from 10 to 500 kc./s. and may be given immediately before the application of the or each layer. Suitable solvents are phenols, halogenated phenols e.g. p-chlorophenol, chloral, chloral hydrate and halogenated fatty acids and trichloroacetic acid. The film backing may be run over an earthed roller and experience an electric discharge from a high frequency electrode. The substrating solution may contain gelatine, nitrocellulose, the copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and styrene, and the copolymer of maleic acid anhydride and vinyl methyl ether.
