[Also in Division B5] A cylinder-head gasket for an I.C. engine comprises two outer plies of resilient material 11 bonded to an interply of a non-metallic fabric 12 by means of an adhesive 10. The thickness and composition of the outer plies may be the same or different. In a method of making the gasket, a composite sheet composed of sheets of resilient material adhesively bonded to non- metallic fabric is cured wholly or partially by heating under pressure in a platen press. The laminated sheet is then cut to size and perforated to provide combustion chamber and water circulation openings by means of a die. The interply may be made of woven, knitted or matted organic or inorganic fibre such as nylon, glass fibre, fibrous silica, acrylonitrile fibre or a fibre formed from the condensation of dimethylterephthalate and ethylene glycol. The outer plies may be formed from a cured rubberized mineral fibre sheet prepared by rolling a mixture of mineral fibres, rubber, fillers and a solvent. The mineral fibre may be asbestos, glass fibre or rock wool and the rubber may be natural or synthetic such as neoprene, acrylonitrile-butadiene or butadiene-styrene. The adhesive employed may be prepared from elastomeric materials such as natural or synthetic rubber, thermosetting or thermoplastic resins or a cured mixture of these resins and may be applied by dipping, brushing, rolling or spraying. Selected resins and resin mixtures are phenolaldehyde resins, epoxy resins, polyvinyl acetate, phenolformaldehyde resin plasticized with polyvinyl butyral, butadiene-acrylonitrile mixed with phenolic resins and nylon mixed with phenolic resins. Examples of laminate composition, methods of making gaskets and comparative test results are given.
