Abstract

970,431. Preparation of esters. WACKERCHEMIE G.m.b.H. Jan. 24, 1962 [Feb. 4, 1961], No. 2712/62. Heading C2C. Esters are prepared by transesterification of an ester with an alcohol, or by esterification of an acid with an alcohol in the presence, as a catalyst, of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, or thorium chelates, of general formula in which X is a chelate-former and/or a whole number, and titanium may be replaced by the other Group IV( A ) metals mentioned. Chelate formers, i.e. substances bound to the metal atom by valency bond and by a co-ordinate link through a oxygen or nitrogen are listed, and include those formed from acetyl acetone, diacetoacetic acid ester, acetyl-mesityl oxide, acetonyl-acetone, benzoyl-acetone, triazyl-methane, benzoyl-diacetyl-methane, formyl-acetyl-acetone, acetoacetic acid ester and substituted acetoacetic acid esters, propionyl-propionic and butyl-butyric acid ester, acetone-dicarboxylic acid esters, oxaloacetic acid ester, mono-, di-, or tri-ethanolamine, polyols, lactic acid ester, or glycollic acid ester, hydroxy-succinic acid ester, hydroxybutyric acid ester, glycerine acid ester, malic acid ester, dihydroxysuccinic acid ester, citric acid ester, diacetone alcohol, dihydroxyacetone, hydroxymalonic-dialdehydes and higher condensation products of acetone (acetone oils). The process may be continuous with the catalyst in a column, or discontinuous by the addition of the reaction components to the catalyst which may be supported on carriers such as aluminium silicate, coke, active charcoal, porous ceramic substances, silica gel, and aluminium oxide. Examples describe the use of various catalysts in the preparation of butyl #-methoxypropionate, n-hexyl chloracetate, butyl butyrate, 2-ethyl butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl #-butoxypropionate, allyl acetate, dibutyl carbonate, phenyl isobutyrate, butyl acrylate, butyl 2-ethoxyisobutyrate, triethylene glycol dibutyrate, dihexyl sulphate, butyl benzoate, diethylene glycol phthalate, 2-ethylbutyl benzoate, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate.
