Abstract
970,097. Thermal switches. SATCHWELL CONTROLS Ltd. July 15, 1963 [Aug. 20, 1962], No. 31925/62. Heading H2B. [Also in Division F2] In an adjustable thermostat comprising a nickel-iron rod 1 in a brass tube 2 fixed to a switch casing 4, an adjusting nut 13 on the upper end of the rod 1 is secured to a member 17 formed with bevel teeth 21 engaged by a bevel gear 23 on a flexible shaft 24 carrying a knob 27, the inner end of shaft 24 rotating in a diametral bore in a shaft 22 on which the member 17 rotates. As the nut 13 is vertically adjusted the bevel teeth are held in mesh by a spring 19 and also by a resilient U-shaped member 26 straddling the shaft 22 and engaging grooves in the shaft 24, the shaft 24 flexing to accommodate the adjustment. A frictionlocking spring 15 engages radial grooves on the underside of the nut 13. The thermostat switch incorporates a magnetic snap-action mechanism as in Specification 625,492 and includes a spring 7 carrying a contact 9 co-operating with a fixed contact 10. A ceramic sleeve 5 loose on the rod 1 extends between the spring 7 and a flange 14 on the nut 13 so that rotation of the knob 27 (through an angle limited by a pin and arcuate slot engagement in the knob) adjusts the position of spring 7 and so adjusts the temperature at which the contacts 9, 10 engage.
