Apparatus for separating a waste portion 14 from a die-cut sheet 11 of cardboard or the like comprises a pair of counter-rotating rollers 1, 2 between which the sheet is passed, the roller 1 being provided with a jacket 8 to which is secured a resilient pad 15 for pushing the portion 14 into a cut-out 16 in a jacket 10 of flexible sheeting provided on the roller 2, the roller 2 having therewithin a plurality of chambers 19 which communicate with distinct circumferential parts of the roller periphery 9 by means of grooves 17 and ducts 18, the chambers having ports 30 which communicate with one of two arcuate grooves 32, 37 in a stationary valve ring 31 according to the angular position of the roller 2, the arrangement being such that when a circumferential part of the roller periphery 9 passes the nip of the rollers 1, 2, the corresponding chamber 19 is connected through the groove 32 to a source of suction so as to cause the waste portion 14 to adhere to the roller 2 and when the circumferential part reaches an angular position remote from the sheet 11, the chamber is released from the source of suction by being connected through the groove 37 to a source of pressure which has the effect of blowing the portion 14 from the periphery 9. The portions between the grooves 17 are of pyramidal shape with flattened apices to support the jacket 10. The sheet, after the waste portions have been removed therefrom, is conveyed away by means of a gripper 45 carried by a pair of chains 46 passing over sprockets 47.
