969,562. Oscillatory vane actuators. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. Nov. 15, 1962, No. 43293/62. Heading F1F. An oscillatory vane actuator comprises a rotor 8, Fig. 2, having diametral vanes 9, 10 oscillatable in a housing chamber 15 sandwiched between end plates 16, 17, Fig. 1, bearingly supporting rotor extensions 8a. Transverse rotor passages 30 . . . 33 and axial rotor passages 28, 29 are supplied with actuating fluid through a pipe 36. The actuator is controlled by bleeding off actuating fluid through one or other of ducts 41 extending from the passages 28, 29. To seal the operating chambers against leakage, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the vane and rotor are completely encased in a coating 47 of elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber. The coating 47 may be moulded to the vanes to provide a wiper section 48 with tapered sides 44, 46 extending along the axial and radial edge portions of the vanes which merge into end face seals 54, 55 concentric with the rotor. In a modification, the wiper section may be keyed in a dovetail groove formed in the axial and radial edge portions of the vane and may or may not be encased in a coating of elastomer material.
