Abstract
969,289. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. YORK SHIPLEY Ltd. Nov. 13, 1962 [Nov. 17, 1961], No. 42964/62. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F4] A portion 11 of the housing of a sealed motor-compressor unit is formed with internal helical ribs 16 which space the motor (not shown) from the housing and define helical channels 15 through which gaseous refrigerant passes to cool the motor before entering the compressor. The pitch of the helical ribs is such that when the unit is positioned with its longitudinal axis horizontal a majority of the channels 15 have portions disposed in the lower region of the housing. Consequently if liquid refrigerant accumulates in the housing most of the channels are blocked and the pressure of the incoming gas builds up sufficiently to force the liquid into the compressor. Stops 17 are provided at the ends of the ribs 16 to limit the insertion of the motor in the housing.
