Abstract

969,168. Maintaining vehicles height constant. B. WALKER. March 26, 1963, No. 11856/63. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F1] An auxiliary levelling device mounted between the axle and chassis of a vehicle comprises a coil or other spring 10 and hydraulic ram 13 in series, the ram length being controlled by a pump 29 actuated by vehicle suspension movements and rendered inoperative when the normal vehicle height has been regained and by a valve 44 which releases fluid when the normal height is exceeded. The ram comprises a cylinder 13 mounted on the movable upper support 12 of spring 10, which surrounds damper 8, and a piston 14 secured to chassis bracket 11 and is supplied with fluid through line 46 from reservoir 16 which contains the pump and height control means. During suspension move- 'ments bell-crank 18, 27 is oscillated about shaft 17 (Fig. 1) by link 19 connected to axle 5 (Fig. 3), anticlockwise movement of the bellcrank moving collar 37 and hence plunger 35 to the right compressing spring 39 and drawing fluid from the reservoir into bore 32 past spring loaded valve 52 and through passage 43. On anticlockwise movement of the bell-crank, spring 39 returns plunger 35 to the left, forcing fluid through check valve 44 and line 46 to the ram and raising the vehicle body when it is low. When the normal height is regained, end 76 of bifurcated lever 74, which is pivoted on shaft 17, moves unloader 69 to the left, first lifting valve 52 from its seat to render the pump inoperative and then on further increase of vehicle height lifting check valve 44 by means of the stem of valve 52 and allowing fluid to leave the ram. Movement of unloader 69 is damped by plunger 61 which is a clearance fit in bore 33 of the pump housing and lever 74 is connected to bellcrank lever 27 by arm 75, pin 77 which passes through an aperture in lug 78 on lever 27 and spring 81 on pin 77. In alternatives the auxiliary spring may take the form of a torsion bar or leaf spring.
