Abstract

968,997. Shoe machinery. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33409/60. Heading A3B. A machine has instrumentalities for operating on a shoe in an automatic cycle, a support for a shoe on a last which moves lengthwise and heightwise of the shoe, and an abutment, against which heightwise pressure of the shoe causes the operation of the automatic cycle. A heel seat lasting machine is described by way of example. The machine has means such as a control member 182 (Fig. 1) which may be used to start the automatic cycle but which can also be operated automatically when the jack post 42 is pressed against the abutment 92. The jack and the control member are both preferably provided with power operated means for their movements and these means may be fluid pressure operated means. The fluid pressure means are brought into operation by means of a treadle, which, being attached to the lever 150 (Fig. 3), when depressed causes the pin 160 to depress the plunger 132 in the valve 130 thus admitting the fluid via the conduit 90 to the cylinder 74 to act on the piston 76 which acts through 70, 84, 66 &c., on the jack causing it to pivot about the pin 41 and thus move the shoes lengthwise to press it against the heel band 10, and heightwise to press it against the abutment 92. Check and throttle valves 166 and 168 are employed to control the speed of movement of the jack in both directions. Depression of the treadle also causes a pin 216 to depress the plunger 208 in the valve 210 and thus admit fluid via the conduit 204 to the valve 202. The jack post is in two parts; a post 42 mounted for vertical movement in the part 44, a spring 54 permitting relative movement of the two parts. The valve 202 is attached to the part 44, and a pin 216 is secured by an arm 224 to the lower portion of the post 42 such that when the jack is pressed vertically against the abutment the relative movement of the two parts of the jack causes the pin 216 to engage the plunger 212 of the valve 202 and thus admit fluid to the cylinder 190 via the conduit 200 and the valve 230. The fluid acts on the piston 192 and through 194, 196 on the collar 198 secured to the control arm 180 and causes this arm to move backwards, i.e. away from the operator, and to trip the clutch which starts the automatic cycle referred to. Specifications 235,286, 510,177 and U.S.A. Specification 1,770,976 are referred to.
