Abstract

Boron phosphate having a mole ratio P : B of 1.14 : 1 is prepared by allowing a mixture of boric acid and phosphoric acid to stand at room temperature for 20 hours. Silicon pyrophosphate is prepared by heating amorphous silicic acid with phosphoric acid. A mixture of boron phosphate and silicon pyrophosphate is prepared by adding boric acid to a mixture of phosphoric acid and silicic acid sol and allowing the mixture to stand at room temperature for 20 hours. Aluminium phosphate and ferric phosphate are respectively prepared by addition of trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate to aqueous solutions of aluminium nitrate and ferric nitrate.ALSO:Melamine is prepared by conducting a mixture of gaseous cyanic acid and an anhydrous inert carrier gas over boron phosphate, aluminium phosphate, ferric phosphate or silicon pyrophosphate, or mixtures of such materials, at a temperature of from 280 to 400 DEG C. and a pressure of from 1 to 11 atmospheres absolute, the resulting melamine being condensed out by subsequently cooling the ffluent gas. The catalyst may contain an excess of phosphorus pentoxide up to 50% above the stoichiometric amount. Specified carrier gases are ammonia, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Examples are given.
