Abstract

Regularly alternating copolyesters of unit structure <FORM:0968390/C3/1> where R is -CO-, -CO.CO- or -CO.R1.CO-, R1 is an alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene linkage, X is cycloalkylene or -(CH2)n and n is 2-6 are made by reacting a di(hydroxybenzoate) of a dihydric alcohol with a di-acid chloride of a dicarboxylic acid or carbonic acid. Reaction may be effected by (a) introducing a solution of the di-acid chloride in a water-immiscible solvent into an aqueous alkaline solution of the di(hydroxybenzoate) or (b) heating the di-acid chloride with the di(hydroxybenzoate) in a high boiling organic liquid (e.g. o-dichlorobenzene or decalin). As a catalyst, N,N-dimethyl cyclohexylamine may be used. In Examples (1) and (9) Ethylene di-m-hydroxybenzoate was reacted with phosgene, terephthaloyl chloride or isophthaloyl chloride; (2)-(8) Ethylene di-p-hydroxybenzoate was reacted with oxalyl, adipoyl, sebacoyl, succinoyl, terephthaloyl or isophthaloyl chloride. The invention of Specification 908,851 is disclaimed.
