Abstract
Compositions suitable for spinning fibres comprise polypropylene and a polymeric modifier which is either a homopolymer of a monomer of formula: <FORM:0968389/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, R1 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or a copolymer of such a monomer with (1) a different monomer of the same formula, (2) a vinyl pyridine monomer of formula: <FORM:0968389/C3/2> where R2 is hydrogen or methyl, R3 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 4, or (3) an N-substituted acrylamide monomer of formula: <FORM:0968389/C3/3> where R4 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R5 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and R6 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, said modifier being present in an amount sufficient to impart dye affinity, light and gas fastness and resistance to oxidation and weathering to fibres of such compositions. The modifiers may also comprise units derived from other monomers containing one or more ethylenically unsaturated groups, e.g. butadiene, isoprene, vinyl acetate, methyl vinyl ketone, 2-chlorethyl vinyl ether, styrene, a -methylstyrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, esters and nitriles, methylenemalonitrile, maleic, fumaric and itaconic esters, vinylidene cyanide, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, N-vinyl succinimide, N-vinylphthalimide, and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. Many suitable monomers of the above specified formulae and modifiers derived therefrom are listed, and examples describe compositions comprising polypropylene and (1) polymethyl methacrylate; (2) poly n-butyl methacrylate, polyethyl methacrylate, polyethyl acrylate, polyisobutyl methacrylate, poly 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, polylauryl methacrylate or poly 2-methoxyethyl acrylate; (3) n-butyl/isobutyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate/ethyl methacrylate, methyl/n-butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate or methyl/cyclohexyl methacrylate copolymers; (4) methyl methacrylate/3-isopropenyl pyridine or 2-methyl-3-vinyl pyridine/3-vinyl pyridine/n-butyl methacrylate copolymers; (5) ethyl acrylate/2-methyl-6-vinyl pyridine or ethyl acrylate/2-vinyl pyridine copolymers; (6) methyl methacrylate/2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine copolymer; (7) ethyl acrylate/N-t.butyl acrylamide copolymer; (8) N,N-dimethyl acrylamide/N-iso-propyl acrylamide/methyl methacrylate copolymer; (9) methyl methacrylate/N,N-dimethyl acrylamide copolymer; (10) methyl methacrylate/ethyl fumarate copolymer; (11) methyl methacrylate/vinyl acetate copolymer; (12) methyl methacrylate/styrene copolymer; (13) ethyl acrylate/acrylonitrile copolymer; (14) ethyl acrylate/vinylidene chloride or methyl acrylate/vinyl chloride copolymers and (15) ethyl acrylate/2-chlorethyl vinyl ether or methyl acrylate/ vinyl chloride copolymers. The compositions may be melt spun into fibres which may be made into blankets, seat covers and marine hawsers, and may be dyed.ALSO:Polypropylene composition fibres are dyed with dispersed, premetallised, acid and direct dyes, said compositions comprising polypropylene and a polymeric modifier comprising either a homopolymer of a monomer of formula: <FORM:0968389/D1-D2/1> where R is hydrogen or methyl, R1 is an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or a copolymer of such a monomer with (1) a different monomer of the same formula, (2) a vinyl pyridine monomer of formula: <FORM:0968389/D1-D2/2> where R2 is hydrogen or methyl, R3 is an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and n is O or an integer from 1 to 4 or (3) an N-substituted acrylamide of formula: <FORM:0968389/D1-D2/3> where R4 is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R5 is hydrogen or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and R6 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, said modifier being present in an amount sufficient to impart dye affinity, light and gas fastness and resistance to oxidation and weathering to said fibres. Examples describe the dyeing with dyes of the specified types of knit tubes of yarns of compositions comprising polypropylene.
