Abstract
An alkyd resin is made by polycondensing (a) a polycarboxylic acid and/or anhydride thereof, (b) a polyhydric alcohol and/or epoxy compound and (c) a mixture of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids in which the carboxylic groups are attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom and which are obtained by reacting mixtures of mono-olefins having at least 8 carbon atoms with carbon monoxide and water in the presence of an inorganic acid. Instead of or in addition to using reactants (a) and (b), there may be used an intermediate product obtained by reacting (a) and (b). The alkyd resin may be reacted in a further stage with (1) a further amount of reactant (a) and/or reactant (c), or (2) an ester derived from reactants (b) and (c) (e.g. a partial ester or a glycidyl ester) together, if desired, with reactant (a). Specified polycarboxylic acids are phthalic, isophthalic, terephthalic, adipic, maleic, dimerized fatty, citric, tricarballylic and trimellitic acids and Diels-Alder adducts of maleic acid with terpenes, cyclopentadiene and hexachlorocyclopentadiene. Specified polyhydric alcohols and epoxy compounds are glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylol propane, 1:2:6-hexanetriol and mixtures of glycerol and diethylene glycol, pentaerythritol and dipropylene glycol, glycidol and dipropylene glycol, pentaerythritol and 1:2:6-hexanetriol, and glycerol and 2:2-bis (para-beta-hydroxyethoxy phenyl) propane. The products may be used in coating composition together if desired with solvents (e.g. xylene), other resins (e.g. phenol-, urea-, or melamine-formaldehyde resins) and pigments (e.g. titanium dioxide).
