Abstract

Low-viscosity slurries of fibre-forming acrylonitrile polymers are made by coating the polymers in solid form with from 2 to 25% by weight of polyethylene glycol, and mixing the coated polymer in a solvent therefor to form a slurry. Acrylonitrile polymers specified are the homopolymer, and copolymers with vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl acetate, acrylic and substituted acrylic acids, amides and esters, vinyl and vinylidene halides, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, N-vinyl imides, itaconic acid and esters, vinyl furan and carbazole, vinyl-substituted heterocyclic amines and methyl vinyl ketone, including the component copolymers. The polymer can also be a blend of two different acrylonitrile polymers. Polymer solvents specified are dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, nitromethane, butyrolactone and aqueous solutions of zinc chloride and sodium thiocyanate. The coating of the acrylonitrile polymer is preferably carried out by adding an aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol to moist acrylonitrile polymer filter cake, which is then dried and ground. The polymer slurries are converted to spinning solutions.
