Abstract

<PICT:0968083/C1/1> <PICT:0968083/C1/2> A continuous esterification process comprises reacting a carboxylic acid, a carboxylic acid anhydride or a partially esterified dicarboxylic acid which is less volatile than water with an excess of an alcohol which is more volatile than water and the ester produced and which does not form a water azeotrope, by heating in a reactor to which the reactants are fed separately in counter-current flow, removing from the reactor 2 (see Fig. 1) a vapour mixture of the alcohol and water, introducing this mixture to a distillation column 8, passing alcohol vapour from the head of the column to a heat exchanger 4 wherein heat from condensing alcohol vapour is transferred to dry alcohol passed through the heat exchanger to the reactor via valve 12 and line 5, returning condensed alcohol vapour to the column via line 11, withdrawing water from the base of the column via line 14, withdrawing a liquid mixture of alcohol and ester from the reactor via line 16 and separating the ester from the alcohol, the latter being returned to the column 8 via line 24. Specified acids are phthalic, sebacic, maleic, adipic stearic, isophthalic, terephthalic, isosebacic, specified anhydrides are phthalic and maleic and methanol is the specified alcohol. An esterification catalyst e.g. sulphuric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid, may be used and is withdrawn from the reactor 2 with the ester and alcohol via line 16 and neutralised in vessel 17 with soda ash and discharged through line 19. In a modification, alcohol vapour leaving the exchanger 4 is passed separately to the reactor 2 via line 25 (see Fig. 2) and the compressors 6 and 26 are so adjusted that the alcohol in the exchanger 4 from column 8 is kept at a pressure higher than that of the alcohol passed into the exchanger 4 via line 3. All water present in the wet alcohol is removed in column 8 by passing a sufficient quantity of alcohol back to the column via line 11.
