Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0967896/C1/1> wherein R1 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom of atomic weight less than 80, or a methyl, methoxy, carboxy, carbethoxy or nitro group and R is a radical having one of the formulae: <FORM:0967896/C1/2> , <FORM:0967896/C1/3> , <FORM:0967896/C1/4> or <FORM:0967896/C1/5> wherein Y is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom of atomic weight less than 80, or a hydroxy, methoxy, nitro or: <FORM:0967896/C1/6> group, A is an oxygen or sulphur atom or a sulphinyl, sulphonyl, methylene, ethylene or vinylene group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom of atomic weight less than 80, and their preparation by reacting a glyoxal of the formula R3COCHO, wherein R3 is a radical having one of the formulae: <FORM:0967896/C1/7> , <FORM:0967896/C1/8> , <FORM:0967896/C1/9> or <FORM:0967896/C1/100> wherein Y3 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom of atomic weight less than 80, or a hydroxy, methoxy, nitro or -COCHO group, or a hydrate or hemiacetal of the glyoxal, with an amine of the formula: <FORM:0967896/C1/111> in the presence of an ether, hydrocarbon or aliphatic alcohol solvent. 4-Nitrophenylglyoxal is prepared from 4-nitroacetophenone. 4-Chloronaphthyl -1- glyoxal hydrate is prepared by heating 1- acetyl -4- chloronaphthalene with selenium dioxide in dioxane containing a little water. The compounds of the invention possess antiviral activity. Specifications 897,303 and 925,445 are referred to.
