Abstract

<PICT:0967571/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0967571/C6-C7/2> A metal-bonded grinding wheel for electrolytic grinding has its non-working faces 16, 17 coated with electrically insulating material 4 and the working surface subdivided into a plurality of circumferentially-spaced segments 5, the gaps 7 between which are filled with electrically-insulating material and include one or more ducts 8 for the supply of electrolyte to the working face. The grinding wheel includes diamond or abrasive particles and the protective material may be a self-hardening resin which may incorporate a lubricating substance, e.g. molybdenum sulphide. As shown applied to a cup-shaped wheel, the ducts 8 provided in the gaps between the segments 5 allow the passage of electrolyte from passages 10, 11 in the hub portion 6 and a supply duct 14 in a fixed bearing block 12. The protective coating may be applied by dipping the wheel in the resin and subsequently removing the covering from the working face to provide the gaps 7; alternatively, the coatings on the non-working side faces 16, 17 may be applied in the form of pre-moulded rings.
