Abstract
967,275. Burners. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 7, 1962 [March 8, 1961], No. 8462/61. Heading F4T. A burner comprises a liquid fuel atomizing head 14 surrounded by an orifice plate 11 which directs discrete jets of combustion air in a downstream direction towards the nozzle axis and a movable frusto-conical baffle flange 8 which co-operates with a frusto-conical ring 2 secured in a furnace wall opening. The orifice plate 11 has a dome-shaped chamber 13 surrounded by four uniformly distributed passageways 11a and has a sleeve 12 which is fitted to a distance tube 9 so that there are air passages therebetween. The tube 9 is fixedly or adjustably supported by a spider 10 in a baffle tube 6 through which the primary air is supplied. The baffle tube 6 is axially movable and carries a frusto-conical member 7, the baffle flange 8 and members 22 having arms 22a which slide along guide rods 23. The member 7 is protected by a refractory material 16 and an annular plate 17 which is itself protected by a refractory material 18. The plate 17 is supported on stubs 19 and forms an air passage with the member 7. A snout 20 extends towards the furnace from the plate 17 and contains air holes 20a. A register 5 supplied with secondary air and through which the baffle tube 6 can reciprocate, encloses the burner. In a further embodiment, the secondary air is supplied in the form of discrete jets through passages in a drum mounted over the furnace opening. A baffle member axially slidable on the outside of the drum controls the secondary air supply. A tube passing axially through the drum supplies pulverized fuel and primary air.
