Abstract

Polymers and copolymers of a-olefins are prepared by polymerization in the presence of a catalyst obtained by simultaneously reacting a di- or tri-halide of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa of the Mendel<\>aeef Periodic Table with an alkali metal or alloy thereof with hydrogen under grinding conditions before the polymerization reaction. The di- or tri-halide may contain impurities including higher halides, in which case it may be treated with an agent selected from: cyclopentadiene; biscyclopentadienyl halides of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, chromium, iron, manganese or silicon; cyclopentadienyl compounds of sodium, magnesium, aluminium, calcium or zinc; C3- 12 alcoholates of the above metals; polycyclic compounds containing the cyclopentadiene ring and the above metal derivatives thereof. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of inert liquid media, e.g. toluene, xylene and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and the products may be washed with methanol and hydrochloric acid, and water. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene and butylene. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst formed from hydrogen and (1) titaniu, trichloride and sodium; of propylene in the presence of catalysts formed from hydrogen and (2 and 4) titanium trichloride and sodium, (3) titanium trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, tetra-n-butyl titanate and sodium, (5) titanium trichloride and potassium, (7) titanium trichloride prepared by the reduction of the tetrachloride with sodium, tetra-isopropyltitanate and sodium, (8) vanadium trichloride and sodium, (9) titanium trichloride and sodium/potassium alloy and (10) a mixture of titanium trichloride and tetrachloride prepared by the reduction of the tetrachloride with a tungsten filament, biscyclopentadienyl titanium dichloride and sodium; of a mixture of 1-butane, trans-2-butene and cis-2-butene with a catalyst formed from hydrogen and (6) titanium trichloride and sodium; and of ethylene and a mixture of ethylene and propylene in the presence of catalysts formed from hydrogen and (11) titanium trichloride and sodium.
