Abstract
966,122. Hydrogen diffusion elements. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. March 8, 1963 [April 17, 1962], No. 14810/62. Heading B1L. [Also in Division F2] A hydrogen diffusion element comprises a tube of hydrogen-permeable material in which is located so as to extend along the bore thereof, at least one stiffener whose lateral rigidity is retained under stress of temperature and pressure thus preventing deformation of the tube but permitting passage of hydrogen. The tube may be made of Pd or Pd alloy, e.g. 25% Ag-Pd. The stiffener which may be made of stainless steel or nickel, may be an elongated coil spring, a twisted metal tape, a perforated tube, a plurality of metallic or ceramic rods, a multiplicity of small diameter metal shot or a plurality of intertwined or consecutively arranged wires or tapes. A pervious ceramic rod or tube may also be used as a stiffener and the rod may have a diameter less than the internal diameter of the diffusion tube and be carried by a header mounted in the open end of the diffusion tube. A hydrogen diffusion apparatus, Fig. 2, is constructed out of a number of these diffusion elements 1 closed at one end 2 and containing stiffener springs 3. The tubes are mounted in the base 6 of a cup 5. Gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen enter under pressure at 4d and pass along the tube 4b and into the casing 4. Hydrogen diffuses into the interior of the tubes 1 and passes out through 8. The remaning gas passes out from the apparatus at 4e. In specific embodiments, various temperatures and pressures are exemplified in relation to a stainless steel coil, the highest values being 700 ‹C. and 800 p.s.i.g. respectively. The Provisional Specification discloses the use of glass beads as stiffeners.
