Abstract
965,615. Packaging-machines. PACKAGING FRONTIERS Inc. Aug. 23, 1962 [Sept. 1, 1961], No. 32401/62. Heading B8C. Flexible packages, which may be of tetrahedron shape, are formed by cutting a roll Fig. 8, of web material at intervals, forming each piece of web into a tube T round a mandrel 35 from which the tubes are removed by suction grippers 59 on a continuously rotating turret machine which successively seals the lower end of the tube, fills the tube, seals the upper end of the tube and discharges it on to a conveyer 67. Each station 55 of the turret machine has its own sealing and filling mechanism. The web may be of laminated paper and metal foil coated on one surface with polythene. Operation.-Rollers 15 draw the web to a cutting roller 19, a photo-cell 23 registering incorrect positioning of printing spaced at intervals on the upper surface of the web. Rotary dies 27 perforate the web which is then carried by endless conveyers 31, 33 between the mandrel 35 and a former 39. Further endless conveyers 43, 45 feed the tube forward, the longitudinal margins being heat-sealed along their inside faces at 41. After removal by the grippers 59 the tube is turned through 90 degrees by means of cam-operated rods 57, and a lower sealing head 3 closes the lower end of the tube before a filling nozzle N is lowered to discharge liquid into the tube. An upper sealing head 1 then closes to heat-seal the package at rightangles to the lower seal, the sealed package being discharged through an aperture 63 in the lower plate of the rotary machine. The sealing heads 1 and 3 may be parallel to one another to form a flat package, Fig. 9 (not shown). The packages may be made from a pre-formed tube.
