A coin-freed apparatus for enabling an electrically-operated service, such as a television receiver,to be switched-on for a predetermined period of time, is arranged so that it will accept a selected one of two specified coins inserted through appropriate slots into a coin pocket 5 where it moves a corresponding finger 9 (or 10) against the action of spring-pressure into engagement with a corresponding setting-wheel 7 (or 8) which,when the coin pocket is rotated within its barrel-shaped housing 2 to a position for discharging the coin, is connected through differential gearing D to switch on the mains supply at 11, start up a synchronous motor 12 and set a timewheel 13 by an amount corresponding to the value of the coin. An adjustable time-period setting plate 4 is mounted in front of the barrel and has coin slots which register with the pocket when the latter is up against a zero limit-stop 31. Fig. 6, shows a coin 32 acting on a ledge 33 to depress the finger 9 into engagement with the setting-wheel 7 mounted on a hollow shaft 35. Fig. 4, shows the slot 17 in the barrel 2 through which the coin is discharged into a till 27 when the pocket is rotated by a finger-piece 6. The till is secured in position by a lock 28 and serves to lock the plate 4 in any selected position, time-interval graduation marks being provided on either the plate or the surrouning structure.
