Abstract

A glass surface is protected from weathering by contacting the surface with an amphoteric metal ammino compound. The preferred compound is zinc ammino chloride. A solution of the compound is prepared by adding ammonium hydroxide to a solution of an amphoteric metallic compound to adjust the pH to a value just above that at which a metallic hydroxide precipitates out. The solution can also be combined with inert materials in powder or sheet form. Either the glass surface or the solution may be at an elevated temperature, from 55-200 DEG C. preferred, but can be up to 650 DEG C.
