A straight-bar rib machine has twice as many frame needles 2 as machine needles 3 and when knitting rib work the machine needles 3 are shogged half a needle space after the machine needles 2 have been lowered so as to receive the loops 20b deliberately avoided by the alternate frame needles 2b which loops drop on to the machine needles from the sinkers, Figs. 5a, 6a. The shogging of the machine needles aligns them with the alternate frame needles which have been rendered imperative by auxiliary pressers causing them to miss the yarn. The machine and frame needles are thereby evenly spaced and a rib fabric having a more uniform loop structure is thereby achieved. The machine needle bar 23 is supported by arms 29 carried by levers 24 which are operated from the main cam-shaft to impart the knitting motions to the needles. The levers 24 are secured to a shaft 8 carrying an end-faced cam 13 co-operating with a similar cam 7c on a vertically movable arm 7 actuated by a cam on the cam-shaft to cause the arm 7 to lower and thereby shog the shaft 8 and machine needles 3 at the appropriate stage in the knitting cycle.
