Abstract

Polyolefines which have been produced by polymerization of one or more olefines at low pressure and in the presence of an inert solvent using a catalyst of a titanium chloride and an organo-aluminium compound are purified by decomposing the catalyst with an alcohol, washing the polymer with water, and treating with an aromatic amine, the amine being removed by acid treatment or steam distillation. Olefines mentioned are ethylene, propylene, butylene, 4-methylpentene-1, hexene, phenyl-butene, and dodecene. Specified alcohols are butanol and isopropanol. Aromatic amines specified are aniline, a - or b -naphthylamine, diphenylamine, phenyl -b - naphthylamine or dimethylaniline and 0.01-3% by weight of the amine may be used to 1 part of the polymer. In Example 1, ethylene is polymerized in a Diesel oil fraction using titanium trichloride and diethylaluminium monochloride as catalysts. The polyethylene is stirred with butanol for an hour under nitrogen, washed three times with water and phenyl -b -naphthylamine added and stirred for a further hour. The amine was removed by steam distillation adjusting the pH to 9 with sodium hydroxide solution and removing any amine left by further steam distillation.
