A cigarette paper 1 of the type comprising areas having different porosity values is characterized in that the areas of diffent porosity are disposed in longitudinial strips on the surface of the paper resulting in a practically constant aeration of the cigarette whatever its diameter. The different porosity values are achieved by providing the paper with a central area 2 having perforations giving a high degree of porosity the remaining areas 3 having perforation giving a low degree of porosity so that variations in diameter of the cigarette have an insignificant effect on the total number of perforations.
