Abstract
964,701. Magnetic structures. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 11, 1960 [Oct. 14, 1959], No. 34798/61. Heading H1H. In a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, e.g. a drum, disc or tape, comprising the steps of forming a suspension of magnetic particles in a binder, applying this to a carrier, and fixing the particles, the magnetic layer is built up to the desired thickness from component layers whose thickness is comparable with the particle size, e.g. 0.2-0.3Á. The particles may be acicular γ Fe 2 O 3 , the binder may be a p.v.c. solution, and the carrier may be p.v.c., cellulose acetate, a polyester resin, aluminium or brass. The particles may be orientated by a magnetic field. As shown in Fig. 1, the suspension is sprayed on to a moving tape which passes below heaters 6, 7, 8, a mask ensuring an even distribution. Several sets of sprays and heaters may be provided or several passes of the tape may occur. In Fig. 2 a rotating drum is coated from a nozzle 11, conductors 13 providing a magnetic field. The coercivity and particle density may vary in component layers. Other methods of applying the suspension, e.g. by contacting a surface or by pouring, are disclosed.
