Abstract
A fuel oil composition comprises a hydrocarbon fuel oil (e.g residual oil) containing vanadium compounds and a corrosion inhibitor, said inhibitor comprising a diluent oil, an oil-soluble dispersing agent, and discrete particles of magnesium oxide, hydroxide and/or carbonate uniformly and stably dispersed in the diluent oil, the amount of said inhibitor being sufficient to give a molar Mg-V ratio of at least 2 : 1, the diameters of said discrete particles not exceeding 0.25 microns, and the magnesium content of the inhibitor being from 4-10 wt. per cent. The inhibitor is formed by condensing the oil-insoluble magnesium compound from an alkanol-soluble magnesium - alkoxide - carbon dioxide complex dispersed in the diluent oil together with a dispersing agent, by heating the mixture to remove the alkanol (which has less than 6 carbon atoms) and decompose the complex, for example as described and claimed in Specification 836,855. The diluent oil may be a mineral oil, vegetable or animal oil, or propylene polymer, polyoxyalkylenes and esters thereof, dicarboxylic acid esters, or esters of acids of phosphorus, and may be diluted with a solvent, e.g. petroleum naphtha or a hydrocarbon. Many diluent oils and additional solvents are specified. Dispersing agents are discussed under the headings sulphonates, phenolic compounds, organic phosphorus compounds, phosphorus sulphide treated olefins, metal soaps of carboxylic acids and nonionic and cationic oil-soluble surface-active agents. Many examples of substituted and unsubstituted compounds falling under these headings are given.
