Abstract
964,006. Feeding webs. J. GAGG, and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Dec. 13, 1961 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 43268/60. Heading B6B. In Fig. 1, the web W passes over an idler roller 3 with a torsioning bond 10; across a splicing table 4; through continuously rotating feed rollers 6, 7 ; into a stationary container 8 which accumulates web for feeding while changing a roll 1; through tension means 19 and thence via idler rollers to feed rollers 17, 18 feeding a machine (not described). A variable speed drive 27 operates feed rollers 6, 7 via a clutch 26 at a higher peripheral speed than that of feed rollers 17, 18 until sufficient web has accumulated in the container 8 to permit changing of the web roll 1 without stopping feed rollers 17, 18. The speeds of the feed rollers are then maintained the same. Upon exhaustion of web roll 1, a loss of tension in the web is detected by a spring pressed arm 29 which operates a micro-switch 28 which in turn disengages the clutch 26. A replacement roll is then fitted and spliced by hand with an adhesive strip to the end of expiring web. The tension means 19 comprises felt, wool or velvet pads applied directly to the web W. In Fig. 3, the web W 1 runs over a splicing table 104 ; through feed rollers 106, 107 normally acting as idler rollers ; directly through tension means 119 similar to 19 of Fig. 1; and over and through dler rollers and a printing device 132 to a friction bond arrangement 134. A spring pressed cam 129 with a roller 154 senses the diameter of the web roll 101. Upon reaching a predetermined diameter, a micro-switch 128 is actuated and starts a reversible motor 136, Fig. 4 (not shown), which drives the feed rollers 106, 107 via a gear train and a one-way clutch 149 at a peripheral speed 10% greater than the friction bond 134. This provides a surplus of web in the reservoir 108 which is used during splicing. A push button switch 137, Fig. 4 (not shown), stops the motor 136, and the expiring roll 101 is replaced and spliced to the end of the expiring web. Further actuation of the switch 137 starts the motor 136 in the opposite direction, and the feed rollers 106, 107 are driven via a modified gear train and a one-way clutch 150 at a peripheral speed 5% less than the friction band 134 until the remaining surplus of web has been used. The motor 136 is then stopped by actuation of the switch 137 so that the feed rollers 106, 107 act as idler rollers.
