963,783. Electro-acoustic transducers. ERIE RESISTOR CORPORATION. Sept. 7, 1962 [Sept. 22, 1961], No. 34314/62. Heading H4J. An electro-acoustic transducer comprises a plate 1, Figs. 1, 2, having a rim fastened to the outside of the hull 2 of a boat to cover a circular opening therein with the rim of the plate 1 overlapping the outside of the hull, an annular groove 12 in a major surface of the plate 1 defining a centre section within the rim of the plate 1 of smaller diameter than said opening and capable of vibration relative to the rim, a piezo-electric element 10 secured to the plate 1 within the centre section, a flexible plastics housing 4 of smaller outer diameter than the diameter of said opening and secured to said major surface of the plate 1 around said groove 12, a metal bridge member 7 fastened to the plate 1 outside the groove 12 and serving as an earth connection, and a cable 5 having an earth conductor 6 connected to bridge member 7 and another conductor 8 connected to the piezoelectric element 10. Element 10 is of barium titanate or other ferro-electric ceramic polarized in the thickness direction. Housing 4 is of epoxy potting compound. Element 10 is surrounded by cork or other air filled material 15 to eliminate transmission of vibrations in the radial mode. Plate 1 and element 10 are equal to a quarter wavelength of the operating frequency.
