Abstract
963,642. Measuring beta particle radiation. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. April 25, 1961 [April 26, 1960], No.14850/61. Heading G1A. Low level beta radioactivity in a liquid is measured by placing a sample of the liquid in a vessel 1 shaped to produce a very thin layer of the liquid and including thin foils of scintillating material, the vessel being placed between photomultipliers 2 which respond to the light flashes. The photomultipliers are connected to a coincidence circuit 6 which responds only to pulses produced simultaneously in both multipliers and thus eliminates random noise pulses. The output from circuit 6 is applied to an anti-coincidence circuit which receives as its second input the output from a ring 8 of Geiger-Muller tubes surrounding photomultipliers 2 and functions to eliminate pulses due to cosmic radiation. A screen of lead may be provided to eliminate the effects of gamma radiation. The thin foils of scintillating material are disposed parallel to the axes of the photomultipliers. Silicon oil may be used as an optical connection between the vessel and the photocathodes of photomultipliers 2. Plastic conductors may also be used to screen off-beta radiation due to traces of potassium (K40) in the glass of the photomultipliers.
