Abstract

Apparatus for compression and extension testing of materials has a fluid-pressure loading system the direction of pressure in which is reversible by means of valves controlled by signals from a dynamometer system whereby loading of the specimen is reversed when the load reaches predetermined values. As shown in Fig. 1, fluid pressure generated by a pump 10 can be applied to either side of piston 1 loading the test-piece 13 by reversing valve 7 which is controlled by solenoids 11, 12. These are activated alternately in response to predetermined compression and extension indications'of dynamometer 14 which, after amplification by amplifier 15, are mixed in comparator unit 17 with a steady nominal signal from one of the transmitters 16a, 16b, the positive or negative resultant signal, amplifed by the controlling amplifier 18, selectively activating one of the solenoids 11, 12. In this way, the stress of the testpiece 13 will follow a time-variation as indicated in Fig. 7. Relaxation of the pressure whenever the direction of loading reverses takes place gradually. Smooth increasing stress in one direction can be obtained by using both transmitters 16a and 16b, the signal levels of which are slightly different, and increasing these at the same rate, as indicated by lines e and f in Fig. 8. Actuation of the solenoids 11 and 12 will thus occur alternately for the values defined by these lines, the median line d representing the loading curve to a degree of approximation set by the difference between the lines e and f. In modifications fluid pressure accumulators are provided in one or both pipes 5, 6, and a single transmitter 16 may be provided, solenoid 11 or 12, then operating when the signal from dynamometer 14 exceeds that from 16 by a predetermined amount in one direction or the other.
