Abstract
963,186. Gas burners; lighting fittings. HUPP CORPORATION. May 2, 1963 [June 15, 1962], No. 17342/63. Headings F4R and F4T. A radiant heater comprises a Venturi tube 22 supplying a gas/air mixture to one end of a distributing chamber 20 which has a decreasing cross-sectional area from the entrance end to the other and which is closed by a perforated burner element 28. The chamber 20 is made of sheet steel and has a flat top and flat parallel side walls. A plate 50 extends diagonally across the entrance end of the distributing chamber and carries a U-shaped screen 52 of wire or expanded metal. The burner element 28 may be a plurality of ceramic blocks having round holes or slots, or a single or multiple fine screens. The ceramic blocks are held by U- shaped retaining strips 136 in a peripheral recess 42 formed at the lower edge of the distributing chamber. A mat 134 of ceramic fibres separates the blocks from the recess 42. The Venturi tube comprises an entrance bell 66 formed by a cylindrical tube merging into a hemisphere and is inclined upwards and inwards along a side wall of the distributing chamber. The discharge end of the Venturi tube is welded to an inclined oval-shaped hole 48 in the side wall of the distributing chamber. The distribution chamber 20 is mounted on the flanged upper edge of a heater frame 24 which has one side piece 88 wider than the other side piece 86 so that when the bottom edge of the frame 24 is horizontal the chamber 20 is tilted by 5 degrees. The side piece 88 has a plurality of exhaust openings 94 leading to two exhaust stacks 96 having internal baffles 112. A hole is provided in the frame 24 for a pilot burner which may be provided with a safety valve to prevent gas flow if the pilot burner goes out. A pyrimidal aluminium reflector 26 is bolted to the flanged lower edges of the frame 24 and a shroud 30 is bolted to the lower edge of the reflector. The shroud has ventilating holes 154 and is formed by two trapezoidal side-pieces and end-pieces which are spot welded together at a pair of opposite corners and are clipped together at the other pair of opposite corners. A grill 166 of vertical strips covers an opening between the reflector and the shroud on the Venturi side only of the heater. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), a grill is provided at each side of the heater and fluorescent light tubes are positioned behind the grills. The heater is supported on a structure by means of apertured angle-pieces 172 bolted to the frame. Specification 700,559 is referred to.
