Abstract

962,809. Universal joints. S. P. V. PAITTI. July 11, 1961 [Jan. 31, 1961], No. 3267/64. Divided out of 962,808. Heading F2U. In a Hooke's joint, forks 1, 2 are pressed or folded from sheet metal, e.g. steel, and each fork has two aligned cross-pin bearing bushes 5 secured respectively in apertures in each of the fork arms. As shown, the sheet metal is formed, before pressing, with bolt holes 3, a locating aperture 4, and apertures in which the bushes 5 may be induction brazed and then reamed for alignment. A central body 7 for the cross comprises a rectangular block drilled with two intersecting bores from opposed flat faces and may be cut from rectangular bar which may be drilled, for the fork pivot-pins, before or after cutting. The pivot-pins may be assembled with the corresponding forks and the body aligned as disclosed in Specification 962,808. Thrust washers, e.g. of nylon, may be fitted, or the bearing bushes may be of lubricating oil-impregnated, sintered, powdered metal and brazed in position to abut the adjacent flat body faces. Needle bearings 8 may have end caps. Driving and driven shafts may have flanges for bolting to the forks or may be welded or brazed into the locating apertures 4. Alternatively, the forks may be used with a conventional one-piece forged cross. In this case, the bearing bushes are formed with inclined inner ends so that the cross may be assembled in the fork arms before insertion of the bearings, the end thrust being taken on end caps.
