962,776. Typewriters &c. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 27, 1962 [July 31, 1961], No. 28981/62. Heading B6F. [Also in Division B8] Coded markings are applied to flat articles such as envelopes by placing each envelope on a moving conveyer 3, perforating a belt 6 with a code to be applied to the article, moving the perforated belt adjacent to the envelope at the same speed as the envelope, and applying a marking to said envelope through said perforated belt. Each envelope 1 is fed by a device 2 into the field of vision of an operator who reads the destination and feeds the corresponding code which is assigned to the destination to a device 8 for perforating the belt 6 by means of a keyboard, not shown. As the last code signal is keyed in an arresting device is unlatched and the envelope 1 falls on to the belt 3. A pair of belts 5 grip the upper part of the envelope and move it to a position at which an ink roller 9 is temporarily pressed against the belt 6 and ink passes through the holes forming the code on to the envelope. The belt 6 is fed forwardly by sprocket wheels 12 and the feed of the belt is controlled by light devices 4 and 17. The belt 6 is dried in a device 11. The feed mechanism for the belt 6 is controlled by photo-electric devices 4 and 17.
