962,621. Beam tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 7, 1963 [Jan. 19, 1962], No. 653/63. Heading H1D. An electron gun for microwave tubes, e.g. klystrons, 0 or M-type travelling wave tubes, includes a cathode 1, Fig. 2, having a cylindrical electron-emitting surface and an accelerating anode 2 located coaxially with the cathode and facing the cylindrical surface, the cathode and anode having between them a space traversed by a substantially radial electric field and an axial magnetic field, and by an additional axial electric field component, wherein a grid 15 is arranged adjacent to the surface of the cathode and has conducting elements separated from each other by a distance equal to a fraction of the distance between the cathode and the grid, the grid being maintained at a potential between the anode and cathode potentials. As shown, Fig. 5, the grid comprises at least a pair of longitudinal rods 13 and a series of rings 12 supported by the rods. Alternatively, the grid may comprise a helix, a cage having bars parallel to the axis or a woven meshwork. The grid may be made of a material having relatively small secondary emission factor, e.g. a surface layer of gold.
