Abstract

A spot removing composition comprises (a) an amine sulphite or hyposulphite, particularly triethanolamine or triisopropanolamine sulphite or monoethanolamine hyposulphite, (b) a polyhydric alcohol or an ester or ether thereof, e.g. ethylene and polyethylene glycol, alkylaryl polyglycol ethers, ethylene glycol monoethyl and monobutyl ethers, ethenoxylated propylene glycol, and glycerol monoacetate, and (c) either water, or another organic solvent for (a), e.g. ethanol, isopropanol, methanol, butanol, cetanol, toluene, halogenated hydrocarbons and esters. The composition may contain detergents such as alkyl sulphates and sulphonates and thickeners such as a cellulose ether and may be produced as a liquid or paste. In addition, the compositions may be used to impregnate fleeces and sponges of natural or synthetic fibres or paper cloths so as to provide spot-removing cloths; they are also useful as froth detergents or shampoos.
