Abstract

Penicillins of the formula: <FORM:0962024/C1/1> and non-toxic salts thereof, wherein R is a phenyl, substituted phenyl or alkyl group, are prepared by a process which comprises hydrolysing under mild conditions a penicillin of the formula: <FORM:0962024/C1/2> wherein one of the substituents X1, X2 and X3 is a halogen atom and the other substituents are hydrogen atoms or halogen atoms. Examples describe the production of D(-)-and L(+)-a -hydroxy-benzyl penicillins from the corresponding a -dichloroacetoxybenzyl-penicillins. D(-)-Dichloroacetylmandelyl chloride is prepared by reacting thionyl chloride with D(-)-dichloroacetylmandelic acid which is obtained by reaction of D(-)-mandelic acid with dichloroacetyl chloride. The corresponding L(+)-compounds are obtained similarly. Specification 880,042 is referred to.
