Abstract
961,585. Fluid fuel fired furnaces for heating molten material. GLAVERBEL. Dec. 8, 1961 [Dec. 9, 1960], No. 44032/61. Heading F4B. Molten material is heated by flames or combustion products delivered below the surface of the melt. Molten glass or metal 13 is heated by flame and gases issuing from a waterjacketed combustion chamber 2 in which gas or liquid fuel is gasified and partly burnt. The extent of the partial burning can be adjusted by altering the longitudinal position of the fuel injector 8. Steam or fuel rich in hydrogen may be introduced through a conduit 23 so that deposition of carbon in the chamber 2 is reduced. The combustion chamber 2 may be formed with an integral outlet nozzle delivering to the melt, Fig. 2 (not shown). In another embodiment, fuel and air is delivered tangentially to part of the curved combustion chamber, secondary air being delivered to a part of the chamber of greater curvature, Fig. 4. The secondary air inlet 30 is coaxial with the combustion chamber outlet 12 so that the secondary air blows the partly burnt gases into the melt. The air supplies are so proportioned that combustion is complete before the gas bubbles reach the surface of the melt.
