Abstract

A composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon polymer and as stabilizer therefor a minor proportion of a solid resinous reaction product formed by reacting, in the presence of an acidic condensing agent, a terpene and a compound of formula: <FORM:0961504/C3/1> <FORM:0961504/C3/2> wherein R is H or a C3 to C12 alkyl group, R1 is H or a C1 to C5 alkyl group or a phenyl group, and R11 is H or a C1 to C5 alkyl group. Specified polymers are those of C2 to C8 alphaolefins (in particular those of ethylene, propylene, butene, and pentene), butyl rubber, Buna rubber, and butadiene and isoprene rubbers. The resinous product may be derived from a and/or b -pinene, limonene, turpentine, camphene or phellandrene, and the following bisphenols:-4,41-isopropylidene bisphenol, 4,41-butylidene bisphenol, 4,41-butylidene bis (3-Me-6-tBuphenol), 4,41-pentylidene bisphenol, 4,41-a -phenethylidene bisphenol, 4,41-(3,3-pentylidene) bisphenol or 4,41-methylidene bisphenol. The condensation reaction is in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate, boron trifluoride, sulphuric acid, a sulphonic acid, or a phosphoric acid. Optional composition ingredients are dilaurylthiodipropionate, dicetylsulphide, bis(tetradecylmercapto)-p-xylene, bis-(octadecylmercapto) -pxylene, 19, 25-dithiohentetracontane and 19, 24-dithiotetracontane. The compositions find application as food receptacles, garbage cans, sheets for wrapping foodstuffs, and as filaments or fibres in weaving cloths.ALSO:A composition comprises a major proportion of a liquid hydrocarbon and as stabilizer therefor a minor proportion of a solid resinous reaction product of a terpene and a compound of formula <FORM:0961504/C4-C5/1> or <FORM:0961504/C4-C5/2> wherein R is H or a C3 to C12 alkyl group, R1 is H or a C1 to C5 alkyl group or a phenyl group, and R11 is H or a C1 to C5 alkyl group. The liquid hydrocarbon may be a lubricating oil, a transformer oil, a petroleum fraction (B.P. range 100 DEG to 900 DEG F.), gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel.
