Abstract
960,408. Radio-active analysis of the ash content of coal. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Feb. 10, 1961 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 4128/60. Heading G1A. A method of determining the ash content of coal consists in the steps of irradiation of the coal by radio-active particles to produce the radioactive isotope of the material which produces the principal component of the ash content and of subsequently measuring the radio-active radiation emitted by the isotope. The coal 1 carried on a conveyer belt 2 is irradiated by neutrons from a vacuum type source or from radio-active sources 5 in a head 3 provided with a biological shield 4. The ash produces the isotope alumium 28 emitting gamma rays which are detected by scintillator material 8 surrounding the belt and producing light pulses operating one or more photo-multipliers 9 and circuits selective to the pulse amplitude for aluminium 28 to pass electric pulses to a rate motor and recorder 11 operated from a high tension unit 10. An alarm 12 or control device is operated when the output from the motor 11 exceeds a predetermined figure. A discrete sample of coal may be subjected to the radiation, and then examined at a spaced or seperated detecting unit.
