Abstract

Polymers of conjugated dienes of high trans-1,4 configuration are made by polymerizing the dienes in the presence of a catalyst system consisting of an organometallic compound of lithium, or a metal of Group II of the Periodic Table, an iodine-containing compound of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, or thorium, and a thioether. The organo-metallic compound may be methyl, ethyl, butyl, amyl, or dodecyl lithium, methylene dilithium, ethylene dilithium, hexamethylene dilithium, allyl, methallyl, phenyl, tolyl, naphthyl, or 1,4-dilithium benzene, butadienyl lithium, dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-butyl, or di-n-octyl zinc, or the corresponding compounds of mercury, magnesium, cadmium, or beryllium, or a magnesium Grignard-type compound. Specified thioethers are dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-propyl, diisopropyl, di-n-butyl, and dioctyl sulphide, methylethyl sulphide, isopropylethyl sulphide, isopropyl-methyl sulphide, and isopropylbutyl sulphide. The iodine-containing compound may be TiI4, TiCl3I, TiCl2I2, TiCl3I, TiI3Br, TiI2Br2, TiIBr3, TiCl2I-(C2H5), TiClI2 (C2H5), titanium monoiodotriacetate, diiododipropionate, triiodomonobutyrate, monoiodotrioxalate, triiodomonoacetate, monochlorodiiodomonoacetate, or monochloromoniododiacetate, or triiodomonoethyl, or di-iododibutyl, or monoiodotributyl, or dichloromonoiodomonobutyl titanate. The diene may be butadiene or isoprene. The polymerization is effected in an inert hydrocarbon diluent, and terminated by the addition of an alcohol.
